Background

During a collaborative studio course at Parsons, I had the opportunity to work with the Red Cross. My team worked with the Red Cross educational team who wished to increase adoption of their curriculum in classrooms.

After interviewing middle school teachers we discovered that they were more likely to adopt curricula that required minimal additional effort due to their busy schedules. We proposed to the Red Cross that they replace or supplement some of their open ended activities with a game.

We prototyped a resource management game set in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010. The game required students to play various disaster relief roles and work together to recover from a disaster. The goal was to build empathy for victims while educating them about disaster relief and preparedness.

Most board games are expensive to produce and ship. We designed a board game that used standard size paper and materials that could be printed and shipped at a low cost.
